POST SECONDARY EDUCATION ASSISTANCE
Mission Aid Brazil has been aiding several members of the Brazilian churches with bursaries and scholarships to help them further their post secondary education, thereby improving their self sufficiency and also increase their ability to help the church and support their own brothers and sisters who are less fortunate. The progress of these students is monitored and they are expected to pay back as much as they are able to in due time. To show you how this works, here follow some examples from Recife.
Two teachers are studying to get their full teaching diploma
One brother has received funds to study business administration.
One brother is presently studying to be a computer technician.
A sister is taking a course to be an events organizer.
They contribute some of their own funds to reach these goals and all pay for their own books. The deacons (together with Sergio Moreira, the local Mission Aid representative) keep an eye on whether these students are financially able to contribute to their own studies as well as monitoring their scholastic progress.
Several news recipients will be added to this program.
A young man will be studying for the position of Auto Mechanic.
A sister will study nursing and she and her husband will contribute some funds, but they also care for his aged mother and need our support to make this schooling a reality.
A newly married brother will study English, a government recognized course. He will be able to teach anywhere with this, and hopes to give back by teaching English to his fellow church members.
All these recipients sign a contract that requires them to give back to the community of believers in some way, both financially and personally after they have reached their educational goal.
BAKERY IN RECIFE
Nivaldo, a young man in Recife has asked for, and received Mission aid funds to achieve his dream of running his own viable, good quality bakery. He is extremely happy that Mission Aid saw the value of this and is hard at work to make a go of it. Sergio says he is a great baker and foresees him doing extremely well. A payback system is in place for him to make contributions to the Guido de Bres School in Recife in return for this financial aid.
GOLDEN YEARS PROGRAM
MAB has gone from supporting a pre-natal and baby program to helping out with a Seniors Program. Government sponsored pre-natal programs are now quite accessible but the Brazilian seniors have very little in place for them in regard to health issues, socializing opportunities and spiritual support. Bete Lins dos Santos of Maragogi continues to operate the Golden Years program in Maragogi, a very popular and well attended program. The building they were meeting in was in bad need of repairs and due to the financial generosity of Mission Aid Brazil supporters the roof could recently be replaced, as well as new floor tiles and windows. The kitchen area, where healthy snacks are provided to the elderly also needed a new countertop to replace the old grungy one, and this very necessary improvement could also take place. All this was accomplished with much free labour from the brothers and sisters in Maragogi, and Bete remains the very cheerful, caring, dedicated spiritual and social leader of this outreach program.
Escola Bíblia Cristã (EBC)
The EBC is a well run modern Elementary school. Its programs offer Christian education for 250 students. Since the parents of the students do not yet fully realize that they are the prime stakeholders in the education of their children, Mission Aid (MA) subsidizes EBC with $10,000(CAD) per month.
EBC is working on plans to include high school education. Hopefully, in due time EBC will be able to realize this justifiable expansion.
Post Secondary Education Assistance
MA provides the deacons of the Igreja Reformada de Maragogí with funds, which are directed to young people who require financial assistance to attend post secondary educational institutions.
It is important to continue and expand this program.
